Do You Let Negative Emotions Drag You Down?
Do you ever find yourself digging yourself deeper into a dark mood? Whether it’s anger, sadness or disappointment, it is sometimes easier to let these emotions take us over than to pull ourselves up and get beyond them.
Why do we like at times to be in a negative state?
There is something inside us that almost enjoys staying in a state of annoyance, irritation, anger or the blues. What is that? In eastern philosophy they talk about attachment. In the west, they speak about secondary gains as why we keep doing something over and over again despite it having an unhappy aspect to it.
What can you do if you find yourself in a rut and yet unable to move out of it? How do you get your battery charged to leave the place of paralysis? First of all, if you are upset about a relationship that recently ended, don’t start looking at old photos, e-mails from him or her etc as this can often increase the depressed mood.
You are vulnerable and it isn’t a good idea to cultivate the memories that will only encourage feelings of loss and aloneness.
If you recently lost your job, don’t daydream about the situation or think about what you could be doing at work now if you were still there. You can easily fall into envy and this is counterproductive at this time.
It is tempting to think about it but remember that you are trying to move on and not engage your mind in reviewing situations that will put you in a state of discouragement. Nurture your mind just as you should nurture your body to make it healthier and stronger.
Dwelling on a situation that is over can only make you nostalgic and often is draining. Instead think about your future, your ideal situation and do some visualizations. Help yourself picture the new situation and plant the seed in your subconscious.
Find people, situations, music and books that help the seed grow and if you start to find weeds growing around the seed, gently pluck them out.
